Richard and Rachel, a middle-aged couple, have been struggling with infertility for several years. They have exhausted all possible medical treatments, leaving them emotionally and financially drained. Desperate to have a child, they decide to dive into the world of assisted reproduction techniques and domestic adoption.

Their journey begins with Richard's sister Cynthia offering to be their gestational surrogate. However, after numerous failed attempts and medical complications, Cynthia opts out, leaving Richard and Rachel devastated and back to square one.

Undeterred, they turn to a renowned fertility clinic and explore in vitro fertilization (IVF). The physically and emotionally grueling process takes a toll on Richard and Rachel and further strains their relationship. They become consumed with appointments, injections, and monitoring every aspect of their bodies in hopes of success.

In the midst of their IVF journey, Richard accidentally stumbles upon some information about a young artist named Sadie, who sells her eggs to a fertility clinic. Rachel becomes obsessed with the idea of using Sadie's eggs as a last-ditch effort to conceive. She approaches Sadie, outlining their desperate situation and offering her a substantial sum of money for her eggs. However, Sadie, reluctant at first, raises ethical concerns and questions the motives behind Richard and Rachel's desire for a child.

Parallel to their struggles with assisted reproduction, Richard and Rachel begin exploring the option of domestic adoption. They attend adoption workshops, fill out endless paperwork, and endure the grueling process of being scrutinized by social workers. As they delve deeper into the process, they encounter heartbreaking stories of birth parents changing their minds, further shattering their hopes and dreams.

While their marriage becomes strained and their sense of self starts to unravel, Richard and Rachel find solace in support groups composed of other couples experiencing infertility. They develop deep connections with fellow sufferers, sharing their stories, triumphs, and heartbreaks, finding comfort in knowing they are not alone.

As the pressures and disappointments continue to mount, Richard and Rachel's ability to cope deteriorates. They find themselves questioning the very foundation of their marriage and the lengths they are willing to go to have a child.

Private Life explores the complex and isolating experience of infertility, highlighting the toll it takes on individuals and relationships. It delves into the deeply personal struggle of navigating assisted reproduction and adoption, while examining the emotional, physical, and ethical challenges faced by couples desperately yearning for a child. Ultimately, the film poses thought-provoking questions about the definition of family, the sacrifice of personal happiness, and the delicate balance between hope and acceptance.
