"The Last Station" is a historical drama set in 1910, which follows the tumultuous final year in the life of renowned Russian author Leo Tolstoy. The film primarily revolves around the complex relationship between Tolstoy and his wife, Countess Sofya, as they struggle with their differing views on love, art, and the distribution of Tolstoy's vast wealth.

As the synopsis suggests, Countess Sofya suspects that Vladimir Chertkov, Tolstoy's loyal disciple and the head of his literary movement, had influenced her husband to sign a new will. This will directs that Tolstoy's entire estate, including future royalties from his novels, be placed in the public domain for the benefit of the Russian people.

The film explores Countess Sofya's desperation to gain control over her husband's will. Suspecting Chertkov's involvement, she turns her charm and seductive tricks towards him in hopes of manipulating him into confessing. However, the dynamic between Countess Sofya, Tolstoy, and Chertkov becomes increasingly volatile.

Meanwhile, a young Valentin Bulgakov arrives at Tolstoy's estate to join the Tolstoian movement as a personal secretary. He becomes enamored with Masha, a free-spirited young woman who is a fan of Tolstoy's work. Masha is a strong advocate for Tolstoy's work being owned communally, opposing Countess Sofya's resistance.

As tensions rise within the household and outside admirers are drawn into the conflict, the film also touches upon the broader socio-political context of Russia at the time. There are scenes depicting the Tolstoian movement gaining followers, intellectuals discussing the merits of communism, and the Russian government growing concerned about Tolstoy's influence.

Throughout the film, Tolstoy himself struggles to find a balance between his commitment to a life devoid of material possessions and the fame and wealth that his literary success has brought him. He questions his own teachings and ideals, leading to internal conflicts that further strain his relationship with Countess Sofya.

In the end, "The Last Station" portrays the turbulence experienced in Leo Tolstoy's final days, as he faces the complexities of his relationships, confronts his own mortality, and contemplates the legacy that he will leave behind.
