American Animals is a crime drama film based on a real-life event that took place in 2004. The movie follows the story of four college students from Kentucky: Spencer Reinhard, Warren Lipka, Eric Borsuk, and Chas Allen. Feeling dissatisfied with their mundane lives, they embark on a daring plan to steal rare and valuable books from the Transylvania University library.

The group discovers that the university library houses a collection of incredibly valuable books, including a first edition of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" and a volume of John James Audubon's magnificent "The Birds of America," worth millions of dollars. Driven by a desire for excitement, fame, and wealth, the four friends decide to carry out an audacious art heist.

However, the young men are not experienced criminals and have no knowledge of how to go about such an elaborate robbery. To gather the necessary skills, they watch classic heist movies, study library layouts, and develop a detailed plan. Additionally, they recruit a professional thief named Mr. Van Der Hoek to act as their mentor and provide advice.

As the team prepares for the heist, they become consumed by their alter egos, adopting disguises and creating new identities. Spencer and Warren, in particular, find it increasingly difficult to differentiate between reality and fantasy, blurring the line between their lives and the lives of the criminals they've watched on the screen.

When the day of the heist arrives, tensions run high, and the four college students must overcome various obstacles and unexpected challenges. Despite their meticulous planning, their lack of criminal experience and their altered states of mind threaten to derail their operation. As they navigate the dangerous world of art theft, the consequences of their actions become increasingly apparent.

American Animals explores themes of ambition, masculinity, and the allure of the forbidden. With its mix of drama, comedy, and thriller elements, the film delves into the psyche of these young men as they find themselves caught between the thrill of their criminal ambitions and the harsh realities they must face. Ultimately, the movie raises questions about the nature of identity, the choices we make, and the consequences that follow.
