In Hustlers, the story is primarily set in New York City during the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. The film follows a group of former strippers who worked at a popular gentleman's club, including the charismatic and resourceful Ramona Vega (played by Jennifer Lopez) and the ambitious Destiny (played by Constance Wu).

As the women struggle to make ends meet in the wake of the economic downturn, they devise a daring plan to take control of their financial destiny by exploiting their wealthy Wall Street clients. They start by luring these clients into the club and then proceed to drugging them, maxing out their credit cards, and stealing their money.

Initially, the scheme works flawlessly, and the women amass a significant amount of wealth, becoming increasingly empowered by their newfound success and control over their own lives. They enjoy a glamorous lifestyle and use their earnings to support themselves, their families, and their dreams.

However, as their operation grows, the consequences become more severe. The illegal activities catch the attention of the authorities, particularly detective Doug (played by Robert Wisdom), who begins to dig into their activities. The women face increasing risks as they navigate dangerous situations, both from the law enforcement and the vengeful Wall Street clientele.

The story also explores the complex relationships and dynamics among the women. As they strive to earn a better life, tensions arise, and loyalties are tested. Destiny, seeking a stable life, begins to question the morality of their actions. Ramona, on the other hand, becomes increasingly driven by greed and power, leading the group down a dark path.

As the group's crimes eventually catch up to them, friendships fracture, and the women face the consequences of their actions. Ultimately, the film delves into themes of female empowerment, greed, survival, and the price of achieving the American Dream.

Note: The plot is based on true events as chronicled in the 2015 New York Magazine article "The Hustlers at Scores" by Jessica Pressler.
