In the movie "El Dorado," Cole Thornton, a renowned gunfighter played by John Wayne, arrives in the town of El Dorado. He is approached by an old friend, Sheriff J.P. Hara (played by Robert Mitchum), who asks for his help in a difficult situation.

Cole learns that a wealthy landowner and rancher, Bart Jason, seeks to take control of the MacDonald family's land. Bart plans to divert the water supply, leaving the MacDonalds unable to sustain their ranch. Cole agrees to assist his friend in stopping this injustice.

To aid in their mission, Cole and J.P. recruit two additional allies. First is Mississippi, played by James Caan, a skilled gambler who proves to be quite handy with a knife. The second is Bull, a grizzled tracker and former Indian fighter.

As the group sets out on their mission, they encounter various obstacles. They face ambushing gunslingers employed by Bart Jason, who desperately wants the MacDonalds off their land. Along the way, they also encounter Nelse McLeod, one of Bart's underlings, who begins to question his loyalty.

Throughout their journey, Cole develops a mutual attraction with Joey MacDonald, the strong-willed daughter of the rancher they aim to protect. However, he keeps his distance, knowing the dangers surrounding his line of work and the battles that await him.

The group finally arrives at the MacDonald ranch, where they organize and train the local ranch hands to defend their property. Cole imparts his wisdom to the inexperienced MacDonalds, teaching them how to handle firearms and fight against Jason's hired guns.

In a climactic showdown, Cole and his companions face off against the ruthless ranch hands and gunslingers on Bart Jason's side. A fierce gun battle ensues, and the MacDonalds show their newfound courage, fighting alongside Cole and his friends.

As the dust settles, Bart Jason is defeated, and the MacDonalds successfully defend their land and water rights. The movie concludes with Cole bidding farewell to Joey and the town of El Dorado, riding off into the sunset, and motivating his friend J.P. to find happiness and love.
