In the movie "It Runs in the Family," the Grombergs, a dysfunctional New York family, find themselves at a crossroads as they face various personal and familial challenges. Alex Gromberg (played by Michael Douglas) is a successful lawyer and the head of the family. He is married to Rebecca (played by Bernadette Peters), and they have two sons, Asher (played by Cameron Douglas, Michael Douglas' real-life son) and Eli (played by Rory Culkin).

Alex's father, Mitchell Gromberg (played by Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas' real-life father), is a retired and stubborn man who is constantly at odds with his son and his grandson Asher. The strained relationship between Alex and Mitchell has trickled down to the younger generation, with Asher rebelling against his family, constantly causing trouble, and exhibiting a lack of direction in his life.

Meanwhile, Eli, the youngest member of the family, struggles to find his own identity and navigate his teenage years. He also has a crush on a girl named Peg (played by Michelle Monaghan) but is hesitant to express his feelings.

The story takes a turn when Mitchell suffers a stroke, forcing the family to come together and confront their long-standing issues and insecurities. Alex realizes the importance of reconnecting with his father and attempts to repair their fractured relationship. Asher, too, begins to reflect on his life choices and decides to make a genuine effort to change.

As the characters embark on their individual journeys of self-discovery, they slowly start to reconcile their differences and realize the significance of family bonds. The challenges they face ultimately lead to personal growth, understanding, and a newfound appreciation for each other.

"It Runs in the Family" not only explores the dynamics of a dysfunctional family but also highlights the enduring power of love, forgiveness, and the ability to change. Through their shared experiences, the Grombergs learn that it's never too late to heal old wounds and build stronger relationships.
