In the movie Eighth Grade, Kayla Day (portrayed by Elsie Fisher) is a socially awkward and introverted teenager who is struggling to navigate the challenges of adolescence. She spends most of her time on social media, where she creates motivational vlogs that go largely unnoticed.

As the last week of middle school approaches, Kayla sets out on a mission to gain popularity and make friends before entering high school. However, her attempts to fit in and be noticed by her peers often result in embarrassing and awkward situations.

Throughout the week, Kayla faces various encounters with other students, including mean-spirited classmates and a manipulative boy named Aiden. She also attends a pool party where she is overwhelmed by social anxiety and finds herself hiding in the bathroom.

In an attempt to step out of her comfort zone, Kayla attends a shadow day at her future high school. There, she befriends the outgoing and confident Olivia (played by Emily Robinson), who gives her advice on how to navigate high school and overcome her insecurities.

As the school year comes to an end, Kayla is given an "Most Quiet" superlative award during the eighth-grade class superlatives ceremony, which further reinforces her struggle to fit in. Despite this setback, Kayla's newfound self-acceptance and determination to overcome her insecurities are evident during her emotional and empowering graduation speech.

The movie concludes with Kayla realizing that she has made progress in her journey towards self-discovery and acceptance. She comes to understand that true happiness and self-worth do not come from popularity or the approval of others but from embracing her own individuality and being true to herself.
