Larry Gopnik is initially confused about his wife's decision to leave him for Sy Ableman, a family friend and respected member of the community. He seeks guidance from multiple rabbis, including Rabbi Scott, who provide him with philosophical anecdotes and parables, but fail to offer any practical solutions to his problems.

As Larry's personal life deteriorates, he faces several professional challenges as well. A South Korean student named Clive Park attempts to bribe Larry for a passing grade, while Larry's tenure application at the university is obstructed by anonymous letters defaming his character. Additionally, Larry's unstable brother Arthur, who lives with him, becomes involved in illegal activities, including gambling and using a neighbor's antenna to watch adult films.

Seeking advice from three different rabbis - Rabbi Nachtner, Rabbi Marshak, and Rabbi Scott - Larry hopes for answers to the meaning of his life. However, each rabbi provides interpretations and teachings that leave Larry more confused and spiritually lost.

Larry is also grappling with his children's behavior. His son Danny (who is preparing for his bar mitzvah) is stealing money from Larry's wallet to save up for a nose-job, while his daughter, Sarah, is constantly listening to rock music, smoking marijuana, and dating a non-Jewish boy, much to Larry's dismay.

As Larry's life spirals further out of control, he attempts to find solace with his neighbor, Mrs. Samsky. Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated when Larry's son Danny becomes infatuated with her.

The climax occurs when Larry discovers that Sy Ableman's life is in immediate danger due to a gambling debt owed to Arthur, who seeks refuge in the Gopnik household from a dangerous debtor. Larry's desperate attempts to reconcile his personal, professional, and existential crises intensify as he confronts his wife, Arthur, and the dangerous debtor who threatens his family.

In the end, Larry's life remains unresolved, leaving the audience to contemplate the nature of uncertainty, destiny, and the inherent absurdity of life. The movie leaves many questions unanswered, emphasizing the complexities of existence and the inability to find concrete answers in a world filled with uncertainty.
