In The Tender Bar, J.R. grows up in Long Island, New York, during the 1970s and 1980s. His father abandoned the family when he was young, leaving him without a father figure in his life. However, he finds solace and guidance in his Uncle Charlie, who happens to be the bartender in a local bar called Publicans.
