In The Upside of Anger, Terry Wolfmeyer, played by Joan Allen, is a suburban housewife who is left devastated after her husband mysteriously disappears with his secretary. Left alone to raise their four daughters in a Midwestern town, Terry struggles to come to terms with her anger and deal with the challenges of single motherhood.

Terry finds solace in alcohol and develops a drinking habit, often spending her days in a drunken stupor. Her emotional state is further exacerbated when her daughter, Andy (Erika Christensen), announces that she plans to drop out of college to pursue a career in photography. This decision adds to Terry's frustrations and feelings of abandonment.

Next-door neighbor Denny, played by Kevin Costner, is a former professional baseball player turned radio DJ. He befriends Terry and becomes her drinking buddy, often joining her for nightly binges. Denny, who also struggles with his own personal failures and regrets, provides Terry with a much-needed confidant and support system.

As Terry and Denny spend more time together, their friendship deepens, and their relationship becomes blurred with elements of both camaraderie and romance. Terry's daughters, Hadley (Alicia Witt), Emily (Keri Russell), and Lavender (Evan Rachel Wood), also form close bonds with Denny, often seeking his advice and guidance in the absence of their father.

However, as their bond grows stronger, Terry begins to question the direction of her relationship with Denny. She fears losing him, but at the same time, she isn't sure if pursuing a romantic involvement with him would complicate their friendship and jeopardize her daughters' perception of him.

As the story unfolds, the characters confront their anxieties, insecurities, and ultimately find ways to move forward. Terry finds an outlet for her anger through self-expression, while her daughters navigate their own personal relationships and aspirations. The film explores themes of love, loss, forgiveness, and the deep connections that can arise from shared pain and experiences.
