In The Upside of Anger, Terry Wolfmeyer, played by Joan Allen, is a suburban housewife who is left devastated after her husband mysteriously disappears with his secretary. Left alone to raise their four daughters in a Midwestern town, Terry struggles to come to terms with her anger and deal with the challenges of single motherhood.
Terry finds solace in alcohol and develops a drinking habit, often spending her days in a drunken stupor. Her emotional state is further exacerbated when her daughter, Andy (Erika Christensen), announces that she plans to drop out of college to pursue a career in photography.
