In the sequel of Painted Skin, titled "Painted Skin: The Resurrection," the story takes place some time after the events of the first film. The immortal fox demon Xiaowei (played by Zhou Xun) has been trapped in ice for centuries but is finally freed by a greedy and ruthless general named Wang Sheng (played by Chen Kun) who seeks to possess her powers.
Once freed, Xiaowei realizes that her beautiful human form is no longer enough for her, and she begins a quest to obtain a genuine human heart. She believes that by acquiring a pure human heart, she will be able to truly experience the emotions and sensations of human life. Determined to find a suitable heart, Xiaowei starts seducing men in order to steal their hearts.
Meanwhile, Pang Yong (played by Feng Shaofeng), a kind-hearted but impoverished scholar, meets a mysterious woman named Princess Jing (played by Zhao Wei). Princess Jing hides a secret that could threaten her life, and she finds herself hunted by dark forces. When she faces a deadly ambush, Pang Yong intervenes and saves her.
In a twist of fate, Princess Jing's heart is mortally wounded during the ambush. Desperate to save her life, Pang Yong seeks the assistance of Xiaowei, offering his own heart in exchange for the demon's help. Xiaowei agrees to the deal, and with her newfound mortality, she experiences human emotions for the first time.
However, things become complicated as Xiaowei begins to fall in love with Pang Yong.
