Roman Coleman is a convict serving time in a Nevada prison for a violent crime. As part of a rehabilitation program, he is enrolled in a program that trains wild mustangs. Initially, Roman struggles to find a connection with both the horses and his fellow inmates. He is guarded, still haunted by his violent past, and closed off to forming any meaningful relationships.

Roman is assigned a particularly unruly mustang named Marquis, known for his aggressive behavior. Marquis mirrors Roman's own temperament, making it difficult for him to establish trust and establish a bond. As Roman continues to work with the horse, he learns valuable lessons in patience, consistency, and compassion, forcing him to confront his own violent tendencies.

Throughout the training process, Roman begins to shed his rough exterior and form connections with both the mustang and his fellow inmates. He finds solace in the routine of working with the horses and gradually begins to let go of his violent past.

As Roman's relationship with Marquis deepens, he begins understanding the power of empathy and trust. The once fiery horse becomes more manageable and docile under Roman's guidance. Roman's transformation serves as a metaphor for his personal growth and the potential for rehabilitation within the prison system.

The Mustang explores themes of redemption, second chances, and the profound impact that animals can have on human psychology. Roman's newfound connection with the horses and his fellow inmates ultimately offers him a chance at a different, more positive future.
