In "The Hippopotamus," Ted Wallace, a disgraced poet struggling with alcoholism, is reluctantly summoned by his goddaughter Jane to investigate a series of mysterious events occurring at her father's, Michael Logan, country manor. Michael, a wealthy and eccentric man, believes that his illness is miraculously cured by a "hippopotamus" residing somewhere on his property.

Ted, skeptical and snarky, agrees to take on the investigation job, mainly because of his dire financial situation. As he arrives at the manor, he is welcomed by a colorful cast of characters including Jane, his old flame Rebecca, her husband Rory, and various other eccentric family members. It becomes quickly apparent that tensions and secrets lie beneath the surface of this seemingly idyllic country setting.

Throughout his stay, Ted encounters a series of unexplained miracles happening to the residents of the manor. These include Logan's incurable ailment being healed, Jane's ability to communicate telepathically with animals, and other unexplainable occurrences. Ted, being a rational thinker, suspects that there must be a logical explanation behind these so-called miracles.

With his wit and sharp tongue, Ted embarks on a mission to unveil the truth behind the mysterious events. As he investigates, he uncovers a web of deceit, hidden agendas, and an intricate plot to use these supposed miracles for personal gain.

As the plot progresses, Ted's own skepticism begins to waver, and he starts to question his own beliefs and the existence of a higher power. Alongside his investigations, he also confronts his own demons, battles with his addiction, and rediscovers his passion for poetry.

As the truth is gradually unraveled, Ted uncovers a surprising conspiracy involving Jane, Rebecca, and Rory. The miracles were all staged to manipulate Michael Logan and gain control over his vast wealth. Ted confronts the culprits, exposing their motives and ensuring justice is served.

"The Hippopotamus" combines elements of comedy, mystery, and drama as it explores themes of faith, redemption, and the lengths people go to deceive others. Through Ted's journey, the film delves into deeper questions of spirituality, personal growth, and the power of belief.
