In the movie Kill Your Friends, based on the novel by John Niven, the story revolves around Steven Stelfox, a music executive working in the cutthroat London music industry during the late 1990s Britpop era. Steven is desperately seeking success and recognition in this highly competitive field, where talent and ambition alone often aren't enough.

Struggling to maintain relevance in an industry overrun by manufactured boy bands and fleeting trends, Steven becomes deeply frustrated and disillusioned. As the pressure mounts, he turns to drugs, particularly cocaine, to cope with his stress and maintain his ruthless persona. Soon, he becomes completely unhinged and his drug addiction consumes him.

Determined to rise to the top, Steven realizes that talent alone won't guarantee him success. He resorts to extreme measures, including manipulation, betrayal, and even murder, in order to eliminate his competition and secure his position in the industry.

Steven's journey takes a dark turn as he becomes entangled in a web of lies and deceit. He is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone who stands in his way, using his drug-addled state of mind as justification for his actions. The film also explores themes of corruption, greed, and the price one is willing to pay for fame and recognition.

Throughout the movie, Steven's moral compass gradually deteriorates, making him an increasingly unreliable and dangerous protagonist. As the body count rises, he becomes entangled in a cat-and-mouse game with other industry professionals, the police, and his own guilty conscience.

Kill Your Friends is a dark and satirical look at the music industry's dark underbelly, providing a gripping and gritty portrayal of the lengths people will go to in their pursuit of power, fame, and success.
