"Remember the Sultana" is a dramatic retelling of the tragic events surrounding the steamboat Sultana disaster during the final weeks of the American Civil War.

The film primarily focuses on the journey of three main characters: Captain William J. Anderson, a war-weary Union officer determined to reunite with his family; Johnathan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier seeking redemption; and Sarah Drummond, a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the Union Army and search for her missing brother.

As the Civil War comes to an end, the Sultana is tasked with transporting recently released Union prisoners of war back home. However, due to corruption and greed, the boat is significantly overloaded with over 2000 passengers, far beyond its capacity.

Throughout the film, it delves into the lives and stories of these characters, providing glimpses into their past and the traumas they experienced during the war. Captain Anderson, plagued by guilt over his actions as a soldier, constantly battles with his own demons while desperately trying to survive the chaos of the overcrowded steamboat.

Meanwhile, Johnathan Edwards, haunted by his actions as a Confederate, becomes accustom to life as a pariah in the Union, but struggles with feelings of remorse and the desire to atone for his past sins. Sarah Drummond, having to conceal her true identity, navigates through the hardships of being a female soldier and the anxieties of searching for her lost brother amidst the chaos of the Sultana.

The tension builds as the Mississippi River, swollen with spring snowmelt, further strains the boat's already damaged structure. Along with the overcrowding, the poorly maintained boilers finally give way, resulting in a devastating explosion that tears the Sultana apart. The subsequent chaos and desperation to survive becomes the backdrop for the narrative, as the characters fight against the odds to save themselves and each other.

In the aftermath of the disaster, we witness the psychological toll it takes on the survivors, who must come to terms with the terrible loss of lives and the guilt of their own survival. The film explores themes of guilt, redemption, and the long-lasting impacts of war on individuals and society.

"Remember the Sultana" serves as both a poignant tribute to the victims of the Sultana disaster, shedding light on a lesser-known event in American history, and a deeply human story of resilience and survival in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
