In the movie Winter Passing, Reese Holden (played by Zooey Deschanel) is a struggling actress in New York City who is offered a substantial amount of money by a book editor named Lori (played by Amy Madigan). The offer comes with a condition – Reese must secure the love letters her reclusive novelist father, Don Holden (played by Ed Harris), wrote to her mother before she passed away.

Feeling desperate for money and curious about her parents' relationship, Reese agrees to the deal and decides to return to her hometown in Michigan. However, when she arrives at her childhood home, she is surprised to find two unexpected inhabitants – Corbit (played by Will Ferrell), a former graduate student of her father's, and Shelly (played by Amelia Warner), a hopeful musician.

Reese is initially annoyed and frustrated by their presence, as she had hoped for a quiet and solitary reunion with her father. It becomes clear that her father, once a highly respected writer, is now living in a state of complete disarray and neglect. He neglects his health and well-being, prioritizing his new friends and their various eccentricities over himself.

As Reese attempts to reconnect with her father and understand his choices, she also tries to embark on a mission to find the love letters. In her quest, Reese uncovers various truths about her parents' relationship, her own past, and the complicated dynamics between the people now living with her father.

Winter Passing explores themes of family dysfunction, the desire for connection, and the struggle to balance personal aspirations with familial responsibilities. Through emotional and sometimes humorous interactions, Reese, her father, Corbit, and Shelly navigate their own individual struggles while discovering unexpected connections and finding solace in unexpected places.
