Saving Face is a romantic comedy-drama film that revolves around a Chinese-American woman named Wilhelmina "Wil" Pang. Wil, played by Michelle Krusiec, is a successful surgeon who lives in New York City's Chinatown and is hiding her sexuality as a lesbian from her traditional Chinese mother, Hwei-Lan Gao, played by Joan Chen.

The film begins when Wil's mother Hwei-Lan, who is in her forties, unexpectedly becomes pregnant. This creates a scandal in their close-knit community as it is evident that Hwei-Lan must have engaged in premarital sex, which is heavily frowned upon. In order to preserve her mother's honor, Wil reluctantly takes in her mother, hiding her pregnancy from the rest of the family.

While caring for her mother, Wil unexpectedly reconnects with a young dancer named Vivian Shing, portrayed by Lynn Chen, who is openly lesbian. They begin a romantic relationship in secret, attempting to balance their love with the cultural expectations of their family and community. However, their relationship becomes more complicated when Wil's mother discovers their secret.

In the midst of these family dynamics, a subplot emerges as a potential love interest for Wil's mother begins to develop. A man named Mr. Huang, played by Guang Lan Koh, who is a widower and a leader in the Chinatown community, starts showing interest in Hwei-Lan. This creates further conflict as it collides with Hwei-Lan's own desires and the pressures of societal expectations.

As the story unfolds, Wil, Hwei-Lan, and Vivian all face the challenge of reconciling their own personal happiness with the burden of cultural traditions and societal expectations. Through humor, heartache, and some unexpected twists, the characters navigate their way in an attempt to find acceptance and understanding.

Saving Face explores themes of identity, tradition, and the complexities of family dynamics, all while shedding light on the struggle faced by LGBTQ+ individuals within traditional cultural settings. Ultimately, the film offers a heartwarming and hopeful resolution as the characters learn to embrace their true selves and pursue love, despite the obstacles they face.
