In "Return to the 36th Chamber," the young actor, named Liu, arrives at the temple of Shaolin with the hope of becoming a kung-fu pupil in order to learn real martial arts and be able to protect the workers at the dye factory. However, Shaolin Temple is known for its strict selection process, and ordinary people are rarely accepted as pupils.

Liu meets the head abbot of the temple and explains his situation, asking for an opportunity to prove himself. Impressed by Liu's determination and passion, the abbot decides to give him a chance. However, instead of accepting him as a pupil, the abbot assigns Liu to work as a lowly janitor in the temple.

Liu starts his cleaning duties but remains determined to find a way to learn kung-fu. Within the temple, he observes the advanced training sessions of the other pupils and memorizes their moves. He begins practicing on his own during his free time, emulating the other disciples secretly.

One day, while Liu is cleaning the 36th Chamber, a sacred chamber reserved for the most advanced training, he accidentally triggers a mechanism that unveils a hidden library of ancient martial arts manuscripts. Excited about this discovery, Liu starts studying the ancient techniques detailed in the manuscripts.

As time passes, Liu becomes more skilled in kung-fu, mastering various techniques and improving his physical abilities by practicing in secret. However, he still cannot reveal his true skills to the other disciples or the abbot, as he fears retribution for not following the proper training process.

One day, while Liu is continuing his janitorial duties, the temple receives news that the Manchu troops are planning to invade the region and destroy Shaolin Temple. The disciples are sent to protect the temple, but Liu is left behind due to his lowly position.

Realizing that this is his chance to prove himself, Liu sneaks out of the temple and joins the disciples in the fight against the Manchu troops. Using his secret kung-fu skills, Liu becomes a crucial asset in defending Shaolin Temple.

Witnessing Liu's heroic actions and exceptional martial arts skills, the abbot finally realizes his true potential. After their victory against the invaders, the abbot reveals that he had been aware of Liu's secret training all along and praises him for his dedication and determination to protect the workers.

The movie ends with Liu being officially accepted as a kung-fu disciple, and he returns to the dye factory as a true master of martial arts, ready to defend the workers and seek justice against the factory owner who had deceived them.
