"The Flowers of War" is a 2011 Chinese historical drama film directed by Zhang Yimou. It is based on the novel "13 Flowers of Nanjing" by Yan Geling, which is a fictionalized account of the events that occurred during the Nanking Massacre in 1937.

The film follows the story of John Miller (played by Christian Bale), a Western mortician who arrives in Nanking (now known as Nanjing) during the Japanese invasion of China. Seeking refuge, he takes shelter in a Catholic cathedral that is being used as a safe haven by a group of Chinese schoolgirls and young women from a nearby convent.

When the Chinese men who were guarding the church leave to fight the Japanese, John finds himself the accidental leader of the remaining women. Desperate to protect them, he decides to pose as a Catholic priest, utilizing the language barrier to conceal his true identity and gain authority.

However, as the Japanese soldiers take control of Nanking, they systematically rape and murder the Chinese population, with the women in the church becoming their targets. John realizes that he must devise a plan to save the women from the brutalities of the Japanese troops.

While taking on the role of their protector, John develops a complicated relationship with a young Chinese prostitute named Yu Mo (played by Ni Ni), who has been hiding in the cathedral. As the two interact and face the horrors surrounding them, their bond deepens.

In an audacious move, John decides to disguise the women as church members and convinces the Japanese soldiers that they are all committed nuns. The plan provides them temporary safety, but it becomes increasingly challenging to maintain the illusion as the women face constant danger.

As the film progresses, the atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers escalate, and the women's situation becomes increasingly dire. Still, John remains determined to keep them safe and find a way for them to escape the city. The Flowers of War portrays the harrowing experience of these women during the Nanking Massacre and the sacrifices made to preserve their lives.

While the film does have fictional elements, it aims to shed light on the historical events of the Nanking Massacre and the resilience of those who fought to survive in such a devastating time.
